Salar De Uyuni is the world’s largest playa. Basically, the largest salt flat spreading over 10,000 square kilometers in area. It is situated in southwest Bolivia, almost 12,000ft above sea level. It is known to have been formed by transformations that happened over time where prehistoric lakes existing around forty thousand years ago, evaporated leaving behind the salt plains that you see today. It is one of the most popular filming locations, appearing in famous movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

2.   The Dead Sea, Between Israel & Jordan

The Dead Sea is known for being one of the saltiest bodies of water present on our planet. With over 34% salinity to its name, the Dead Sea is a Hebrew derivative literally translating to the Salt Sea. Even though due to environmental causes, the Dead Sea is drying up, it still remains to this day one of the most active tourist destinations in the world. After all, it is worth experiencing the ability to float free in the Dead Sea at least once in your lifetime.

3.   Mount Kelimutu, Indonesia

What comes as the biggest shock to people who visit Munt Kelimutu is that it is actually a volcano. Yes, Kelimutu – a mountainous region situated close to the small town of Moni in central Flores island in Indonesia might be well known for hosting three unusual water bodies, but it is actually originally a volcano. With three crater lakes of different colors that even change periodically, Kelimutu is a must to visit on our list.

4.   Mendenhall Ice Caves, Alaska

Breathtakingly blue, gorgeous glaciers, the Mendenhall Ice Caves in Alaska are one of the most beautiful places in the world that you can ever visit. What makes it unusual is the fact that you get to experience all three states of the water right here in this single place. From 12 mile long glaciers to blue water flowing around it and a cold fog for the perfect aesthetic, Mendenhall Ice Caves are definitely a surreal mix of nature’s wonder.

5.   Pamukkale, Turkey

The travertine pools of Pamukkale, Turkey, have been a jaw-dropping wonder for many tourists worldwide. After all, where else in the world would you get a chance to experience a dip in nature’s very own swimming pool? Pamukkale translates to “cotton castle” in Turkish, which denotes the white beauty of this natural site. That famous carbonate mineral leftover of the thermal spring waters gives it the look of individual pools and is worth being UNESCO’s world heritage site.

6.   The Tianzi Mountains, China

Featured in the riveting Avatar movie, the Tianzi Mountains are located in China. The mountains are famous because of their unusual pillar-like appearance instead of the usual triangular mountain ranges. Therefore, the highest pillar of the Tianzi Mountain site, known as the Kunlun Peak, can go to the heights of almost 5000ft. The name “Tianzi” is taken from the Tuija ethnic group, which means the Son of Heaven, attributing to the traditional epithet of the Chinese emperor.

7.   Marble Caverns, Chile

Words might not even do justice to how beautiful this place is. The Marble Caverns of Chile are like nature’s personal illusion. Over time, the astonishing shapes of the shimmering rocks, stones, and deposits have created this huge marble-like structure that is a wonder to look at and a whole experience on its own. However, even with its name and looks, it may appear marble-like, but the Marble Caverns are not actually made of marble.

8.   Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

The depression term in its name refers to a geological depression that resulted from the movement of three tectonic plates in the Horn of Africa, giving birth to the Danakil Depression. It is considered one of the hottest places to exist on Earth, with all-year-round temperatures exceeding records. Moreover, it is also credited for being the lowest place on the face of our planet too, given it is 330ft below sea level.
